Kigass Engineering – Leamington

Kibraz Blow Lamp and Motor Accessory Co became incorporated on the 3 September 1924 and in 1937 are manufacturing the “Easy Starters” a petrol mist injector. (Kigass Easy Starter).

I haven’t found who invented the Easy Starter but the pump from one of the Kibraz or the Kigass soldering irons looks like it could have been easily converted into the pump for the Kigass Easy Starter.

The “Kibraz Geant” Blow Torch and the Kibraz Baby were manufactured by S.A Appareils J C Apma Malivert, Paris and had been imported by Turtle Hardware store from Croyden who claimed to be the sole suppliers of the Kibraz and Kigaz blow torches.

Turtles founder Louis Henry Turtle bought the retail and cutlery shop at 6 Crown Hill, Croydon in 1894.
Turtles closed in 2005.

A Ki-Gass petrol mist starter pump can be found on some early cars, one was fitted on the Bugatti Type 35 introduced in 1924 and the Vauxhall 30/90.

On the button of an early mist pump, Ki-Gass are shown as being at Kibraz House. Carrington Mews, London, W1.
In 1936 they advertised the Kigass Easy Starter (Petrol Mist Injector) from 6 Fitzroy Square, London W1.
As a proven device that had been in production for over 10 years.

Kigass advertised in 1938 the Kigass quick starting petrol mist injector now from 19 Fitzroy Square, London W1.

Through the Second World War Kigass manufactured the primer pump for Spitfire, Hurricane and even the Sunderland Flying Boat and many other wartime aircraft.

The company parts can still be found in working Spitfire aircraft.

By 1945 Kigass has moved to 31 Regent Grove, Leamington Spa where Rex Wardman ran the business until the mid-’70s 1950 Kigass advertises the Kigass Aircraft Windscreen Washer Systems featuring a new pump and Frosol Winter windscreen washer fluid, sold from 31 Regent Grove, Leamington Spa and also from 28 South Molten Street, London W1.

1954 Kigass advertises the Niagara Screen Wash from 31 Regent Grove, Leamington Spa.

The Easy Starter is now being fitted to the Ferguson TEF-20 1951-1956 (Little Grey Fergie) and FF30 1957-1958 Tractor.

Mid-1970s Arthur Wardman expanded the company through acquisitions to a point where Kigass employed over 1200 people in Leamington and Warwick working in the automotive and aerospace industries.

One of my friends was working there in the 1980s and she was assembling car light units for a company in the Automotive industry.
They also produced Small Lamps, Door Handles, Air Vents, Head Restraints and Plastic Mouldings and assemblies.

They also had premises on the Sydenham Estate at Berrington Road and Caswell Road, plus an Electronics factory and Motor factors in Redditch.

In the late ’90s, much of the business had been sold but the core aerospace and a specialist autosport department remain from the premisses in Montague Road, Warwick.

27 February 1998 Kigass Engineering Ltd was bought by the American company Collins and Aikman, who had premisses Collins & Aikman (Plastics) Ltd in Cape Road, Warwick before it closed down in 2001.

Arthur Wardman retired on 29 December 2015.
