Lewer’s Garage was in the middle of Southam near the corner of Market Hill and Daventry Street next door to then, Archers the Chemist.
The photo dated 1933 next door to Archers the Chemist, shows them selling “Power Petroleum” (being absorbed by Shell & BP in 1934) an independent supplier from a pump with the latest swinging arm gallows delivery hose, these were fairly common by the end of the 1930s.
Even in the early 1930s some people still preferred to buy the fuel in tins (sealed at the refinery) as they had doubts about the quality of petrol from roadside pumps.
Apparently, some traders purchased low-grade fuels and sold it then as a premium brand.
On the front just above the “Garage” sign maybe what looks like an AA members sign.
The premises were much larger than it looks from the front as there was another entrance in Bull Street.
The earliest advert was in June 1915, and last in January 1939.
