Royal Spa Garage – Leamington

The Royal Spa Garage was next door to what was the Theatre Royal at 25 Regent Grove in Leamington Sap

The earliest advert found was on March 9 1911 where in the Banbury Guardian that they have two premisses, a very aptly named Wrench’s Garage in Banbury and also the Royal Spa Garage in Leamington.

On Friday 4 April 1913 there is an advert for Stanley Wrench and stated that they were the sole agent for the Standard Motor Car and sole concession for the “Mors” Motor Car.

The Garage was then named Stanley Wrench, Royal Spa Garage and of 386 Euston Road, London, N.W.2.

December 2, 1932 – Stanley Wrench, Parliament Mansions. Parliament Hill, Highgate, London, N., and 404 Euston Road, London, N.W.2, salesman, is named in the: The London Gazette, as receiving orders for bankruptcy.

But in 1918 it was now owned by a Percy William Webster who was a Cycle Dealer that had moved from Kenilworth and mentioned in a bankruptcy hearing in October 1921 with debts of £3,951 pounds, 11 shillings and 5 pence after just three years of ownership, by September this has increased to £5,343. 8s and 7 pence.

In January 1922, he again get a mention in a bankruptcy hearing by the Deputy Official Receiver for parts that had gone missing from a motor car in his possession, and an advert for the sale of all the bankrupt workshop and office items by Locke and England.

1935 it is now named the Theatre Royal Garage,.and is then owned by a Mr Gardener.

The last advert found was on 9 July 1937, but it still has a mention as winners in a raffle draw for the Prisoners of war fund on April 30 1943.

On Oct 1 1941 it is now called the Theatre Garage and there is an advert by Stream-Line Taxis for drivers of either sex as taxi drivers where the business is being run from.

October 26, 1943, a Mr Scott has an advert for a 1939 Standard Motor Car,. c/o the Theatre Garage.

Advert in October 1967 and it has become it became Chillingsworth Car Sales.

By 1970 it is now called Stephens of Leamington (Stephens Car Sales) and the business address is still Theatre Garage.

Believe the Garage along with the Old Theatre was demolished in 1984.

The Theatre Royal in Regent Grove, previously as The Opera House opened on the 2nd of October 1882 and was closed as a live entertainment venue in 1934, but in 1935 was reopened as the Regent cinema.
